Two guest speakers will present how MITRE, a non-profit organization, uses data mining, computer vision, and machine learning in real-world projects. Both speakers are WVU Alumni and they will also share their experience about their career.

Nicholas Rymer

Nick Rymer is a graduate of the WVU CSEE department with bachelor’s degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.  Nick has been supporting federal identity sponsors since 2007 where he started as a test engineer with the Biometric Identity Management Agency in Clarksburg WV and eventually transitioned to MITRE in 2009 supporting biometric systems projects.  For the last 5 years, Nick has led a project to develop multimedia exploitation capabilities with personal interests in data science, machine learning and HPC solutions.

Dr. Emily D. Pertl

Dr. Emily D. Pertl is currently a Lead Systems Engineer at the MITRE Corporation in Clarksburg, WV. Previously, she was Subject Matter Expert for several database systems, Lead Information Engineer with Biometric Identity Management Agency, spent eight years at WVU as an Engineering Program Coordinator, and initially started as a Mechanical Engineer at Aquatech International Corp. Prior to which she graduated from WVU with PhD, MS, and BS degrees all in Mechanical Engineering. She is a member of Sigma Xi, ASME, SAE, AIAA, and has published 8 journal articles and 11 conference proceedings. For over past five years, she has been supporting various federal sponsors in data mining and analysis, as well as leading the efforts on testing of a multitude of software applications in database and multimedia exploitation.

Relational Databases : Analysis, Design, Development

 We hosted a seminar going over everything DATABASES! The workshop covered basic skills for analyzing and designing Computer Based Information Systems (CBIS), building Relational Databases (RDB), and database management.
